It's not that i planned to just share all the Boing Boing links today, but the Great Garloo Ad posted on Youtube got me thinking.
In my house when we were kids, Garloo was considered beneath contempt by my brothers. Still is, as far as they're concerned. At our house, we had Big Loo, pretty much a superior Marx toy in every way.
Sometimes i'd bring up Garloo (i'm not proud to say i still do, in fact). Because i always loved robot, monster, and alien toys, i kind of wanted Garloo, though as the big sister i was supposed to be beyond such things. So i played with the far more decotastic and elegant Loo my brother Ramon got for Christmas. But after checking out both commercials, can we at least concede that Garloo had the better ad? They totally shoot to make him appear much bigger than he actually is, whereas Loo, who is huge, is presented... as big as he is. Loo can do a ton of stuff, Garloo can pretty much roll, but in the commercial he looks like he's about to bite off the head of a nightclub singer. i feel so vindicated.
Though i may still look wistfully at Garloos on eBay, what this really indicates is that Ramon is a wise shopper, resistant to the most extravagant claims of Madison Avenue even as a child. Look forward to his favorite 100 films here in a few days.
Thanks for posting these vintage toy TV commercials. I don't know why but I really love them. I used to collect them on VHS, ha ha. Oh yeah, Big Loo has nipples that shoot darts, creepy!
Thanks, Tommy
