This has gotten very little press so far - someone should run with it. FEMA is closing all of the New Orleans camps/tent cities that volunteers are staying in, as of April 10. These tents have been housing the volunteers gutting houses from organizations ranging from ACORN to Habitat for Humanity. the only stories on this so far on the net have been:
Christian Broadcasting Network:
http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/usnews/060327a.asp and
Talking Points Memo Cafe
http://www.tpmcafe.com/node/28224.

This is ridiculous -- the very least that the federal government should do is house and feed volunteers coming to help.

Yes, it is ridiculous. A lot of people from other parts of the country thought NOLA residents were being paranoid when they expressed skepticism about being allowed to return after the flood. But they way the neglect is playing out seems completely intentional. There was a story on NPR a few weeks ago, covering some folks who struggled to keep paying the banks for their damaged homes who are still waiting for promised trailers, and the lucky few who got trailers, only to find out there would be no one coming around to connect them to power, water or fuel. So they wait, and watch, and pay the bank, until their homes go from damaged to destroyed.
