Even during lackluster runs, something fun always seems to happen on All My Children during the holidays. That is, if you, like me, are driven into ecstatic giggles by rampaging Christmas corn. Babies are recovered, blindness cured, and phantom priests produce miraculous talismans. On today's cliffhanger Friday, we saw the first sign of something the show's fans have anticipated for months, the return of the wildly popular actress Cady McClain as Dixie Louise Cooney Chandler Martin Bodine Martin. McClain wasn't the first actress to play Dixie, but she played the role on and off for fourteen years, and it's clear from the post-Dixie storylines that she was considered irreplaceable. She has a unique ability to breathe intelligence and animation into a character who, as written, is really pretty dumb. Dixie is kind, loyal, trusting, and beautiful, but not too bright. If you're inclined to dispute this, read this charactaer summary, and weep. And note the character is listed as deceased. But, in the land of serial fiction, if there isn't a body to weep over the character isn't gone forever. If there is a corpse, there's always returning as an angel or as an identical twin. Dixie's return should give the writers lots to do with Michael E. Knight and Vincent Irizarry, spinning their wheels since Cady left. With Eden Riegel back just for the holiday, maybe Darnell Williams will appear to give advice to Tad. Or, with the return of Janet From Another Planet, can Uncle Pork Chop be far behind?
