"Prime Time Nobel Prize"
i haven't had much time for the blog in the last few weeks. Tons of personal issues, eBay, preparations for Penguicon, and finishing a painting before deadline had me going already when Took asked yesterday if i could go visit Matthew Gordon's Northville studio with her. Tired and in no mood to detour last night, i was dying to meet this brilliant and fascinating artist and check out his studio. i'm so glad i tagged along! Photos of paintings and drawing are by Matthew Gordon and CPop; others are from Took last night.
"Optimist Park"
There was some urgency in the visit; Matt has just completed a commission he wanted to show off before it's shipped - a gorgeous little painting he's been laboring on since early last fall. It's uncharacteristically g-rated, but characteristically sexy and disturbing anyhow. i'm showing older work here, but if you keep your eye on Juxtapoz, i'm sure you'll see it soon.
His paintings have stories, tell stories, are stories. The figures all have names and backstories evolving as he dreams or paints them. Many of the surreal creatures are hybridized dolls and figures he's created. His toy cabinets are fan-tabulous. i implore you to visit the RVCA Clothing Website, and check out the great movie about Matt. Unfortunately, RVCA's very nice site has no direct link to the film, so: goto RVCA Roots/Video/Artist profiles/Matt Gordon. Trust me, it's worth it (and there are tons of other nice things there beyond Matt and his t shirt designs), for the peeks at his wonderful studio.
Matthew shows his Lemmy reference for Took's painting.
The second purpose of the visit was to discuss Took's commission. Possible elements (Neptune, Lemmy, crows, cats...) and size (huge). He has plans in the works for film and game designs, even Halloween costumes and (at last!) a book .
"Sure As Shit, That's Some Sweet Emotion"
Because i just love this drawing!
A good place to see a selection of Matt Gordon works is the online gallery at CPop. i could go on and on, but why not explore for yourself? Took is sitting Neptune for a while, and he was wavin' at the gents in a cafe window on the way home. A total blast was had by all, which is some compensation for the i'm-not-worthy feeling i get looking at those canvases. i like my work, but it's hard to even look at after Matt's exquisite paintings. He's an inspiration to us all.
Neptune Before His Car Trip

Oh man -- this looks GREAT!!! THANKS, Juana for going with me -- couldn't have done it without you -- besides, who would have kept Neptune Grizzly under control on the way home?!?
P.S. I keep hearing "Where's Aunt Juana" coming from upstairs.
Cheers --
Took
